who we are

The Polyphonic Choir Psalterium is a group of amateur singers who first met in January 1999 to sing together in the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Laterano.
We are now about 20 (and are recruiting new singers): some of us have different previous choir experiences, some others have begun to learn music joining the Psalterium. The Conductor, M°Andrea Savo, has graduated from the Conservatoire, and since has attended several courses on various aspects of ancient and vocal music, held by G. Acciai, M.Boschini, and M.Verde.

Our performances are dedicated both to sacred music, at the two traditional meetings of the Christmas and Easter Concerts; and to secular music concerts, which vary each year their seat and contents.

Every year, a festival called "May in the Baptistery" is held in the Baptistery. We ask other choirs to perform and illustrate a different aspect of sacred music. The 8th edition took place in 2007. [To know more about our Rassegna have a look at the Festival page.]
The authors in our Repertoire range from the 14th to the 19th century. We sing -mostly- a cappella polyphonic music from the Renaissance, but also baroque or romantic pieces accompanied by the strings quartet or by the organ.
